Collect of the Week:

Let us pray…

Almighty and everlasting God, thank You for sending your Son Jesus to be the Light of the world.  The Law has shown us the darkness of our sin, and we beg your forgiveness.  Help us confess that Jesus is the Son of God, the Savior of the world.  Be with Lisa during the darkness of her suffering and assure her of Your eternal presence.  Strengthen Brenda as she faces the days ahead; be her light in the darkness of uncertainty. Comfort all who struggle in sin and lead them to repentance; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Collect of the Week:

Let us pray…

Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus you proclaimed Him to be Your Son.  Thank you for claiming us as your own through our baptisms.  Your Son Jesus took us – filthy of sin – and clothed us with Himself.  We now stand before You as pure sons and daughters.  Grant each of us joy in our daily callings.  Give us Your Holy Spirit to ward off temptations of the flesh, such as jealousy and pride; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Collect of the Day:

Let us pray…

Dear Heavenly Father, through Holy Baptism You called us to be Your own dear children.  You have forgiven all of our sins in this holy gift.  Your crucified and arisen Son Jesus intercedes for us now in heaven.   Grant that our lives may daily give proof that the Holy Spirit is working within us.  Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go but trusting that You are leading us and loving us every step of the way; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Let us pray…

Lord Jesus, You are the answer to our waiting. Preach to us again and again the good news of Your coming that we might run with the shepherds to Your manger to marvel at Your birth. Teach to us again and again the saving work of Your passion that we might run with Mary to the cross to witness Your sacrifice. Proclaim to us again and again the miracle of Your rising that we might run with Peter and John to the empty tomb to rejoice in Your victory. We are waiting on You still, Lord, to return and save us from this life. Comfort those who wait in physical pain, especially Lisa, Jen, and Katie. Restore unto them the joy of Your salvation and uphold them with Your Spirit until Your second coming. Come quickly, Lord Jesus! Amen.

Let us pray…

Lord Jesus, You are the Light of the world. Some days feel so dark. Sadness and weariness close in around us, and we would despair. Cleave the darkness with your Word, once again, and bring us safely into the comfort of your everlasting light. O come, O come Emmanuel! Amen.

Collect of the Day:

Let us pray…

O God, You promise us that after we have suffered a little while, You will restore us, strengthen us, and establish us. Restore the lives of all who suffer, particularly our sisters Teresa and Lisa, that they may be comforted amidst their sadness and strengthened to stand firm against every assault of Satan. Be our salvation, our strength, and our song unto life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Collect of the Day:

Let us pray…

Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to make ready the way of Your only-begotten Son, who has won for us life eternal by His death on the cross.  Remind us that our hope is in You alone, not in what we can do for you.  Grant us faith to trust firmly in You, despite our troubles and sorrows.  Comfort all parents who mourn the death of a child, especially Teresa and her husband.  Take them into Your care and lead them to look to You for confidence and strength as they face the future.  Comfort them with your everlasting love; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Collect of the Week:

Let us pray…

Almighty and ever-living God, You have given exceedingly great and precious promises to those who trust in You.  Thank you for the life you grant us in our baptisms.  Thank you for your promise to never forsake us, even in our times of sorrow.  Dispel from us the works of darkness and grant us to live in the light of Your Son, Jesus Christ, that our faith may never be found wanting; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

Collect of the Week:

Let us pray…

O Almighty God, You are Greatest, both in heaven and on earth.  And yet, through your Son’s death on the cross, you made yourself low, and last, in order to save us. Guide our pastors–the men you’ve sent to shepherd Your Church–as they faithfully preach Your Word and administer Your Sacraments in the stead of Christ.  In this, send Your Spirit to turn our hearts away from our selfish family desires and to fix them on your eternal gifts.  Forgive and renew us. Lead us to Your means of grace and service to our neighbor daily, as You promised You would. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Words to Memorize

Other than the Lord’s Prayer, I can think of no better prayer for the barren woman to have engraved in her heart than the collect for the fifth Sunday after Trinity. I have pledged to memorize it myself this week so that it might be quickly recalled during those moments of heartache. It beautifully refocuses our desires to that which will never disappoint us.

O God, You have prepared for those who love You good things that surpass all understanding. Pour into our hearts such love toward You that we, loving You above all things, may obtain Your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
